Has the Internet ruined the music industry?
What an exciting time to be an independent artist! It has been said that the internet has ruined the music industry. But, I would beg to differ. The internet has "changed" the music industry but it hasn't ruined it; especially for indie artist. Musicians now have the opportunity to reach millions of people without leaving their living room! Letting go of a day job my not be an option just yet, but building a fan base has never been easier. Yes, it will take some understanding of how digital media works but there is a plethora of information available to inform and educate even the novice . With a little effort an indie artist can expand their audience, get more gigs, and make more money!
How to get started!
TOOLS
- Website
- Social media - Twitter, Facebook, Reverbnation, SoundCloud, Spotify, YouTube, etc.
WEBSITE
Every artist should have a website. And, not just any old website; an optimized website. Fans should be able to view and navigate an artist website on any device, especially mobile devices. I fans can't easily get to the music on a website with their phone, chances are they will leave and not come back. A responsive website will take care of that.
SOCIAL MEDIA
A little social media can go a long way. Facebook alone has over 1.94 billion monthly active users
! Music is increasingly being consumed on mobile devices and Facebook has over 1.5 billion active mobile users. And then there are the online platforms that host music, such as SoundCloud
, Reverbnation
, Spotify
, etc. An artist doesn't need to reach a billion or even a million users to garner a successful following. With some patience, consistency and a small cash investment an artist can reach a sizable audience for brand of music.
EMAIL
The number of e-mail users in the United States is projected to grow to 244.5 million
by the end of 2017. Many people are now receiving email alerts on their phones, increasing the chances that an email will be opened and read. Notifying fans of new music, newsletters and gigs using email can be a effective use of time and energy for an indie artist.
So, has the internet ruined the music industry? I don't think so. An artist is an artist at every level. The only thing that separates the known from the unknown is passion. Look at Justin Beiber. He started on Youtube and now he is a household name.
So, start sharing your music today!
Start by investing in a responsive website. There are many benefits to having a website. First and most importantly, your fans know where to find you. As fans google your name they should be able to find your website. Secondly, you can sell your music from your website and keep all the cash. No middleman taking a cut. Lastly, a website legitimizes your brand. When booking agents see that you have an up-to-date website they have more confidence promoting events. Use social media and email marketing to communicate directly with your fans. Take the time to respond to post and emails and watch your fan base grow!
